Another day in the locker room after training, a young fellow—about half my age—said that he takes it, class by class, one at a time. No pressure, just two or three sessions per week.
Maybe that’s a good approach: not putting too much pressure on oneself. Take it as it comes. One step at a time. From class to class. Stay relaxed. Focus on the techniques you’ve already learned. Try to improve, but don’t overload yourself with expectations—especially in your late 50s.
Yesterday, I didn’t feel great during the warm-up. I was exhausted right from the start and felt like I might need to pause. But as the exercises went on, I actually started to feel better.
We were learning a takedown from guard when the opponent is trying to pull up. You grab his leg and, using your body weight, take him down. Once on the mat, you move into mount, turn around, isolate his arm, and finish with an armbar.
At first, my partner and I struggled with the movement, but after a while, it started to click.
Later, during free rolling, I managed to pull off that takedown for real. Needless to say, that moment brought huge satisfaction.
