The blog I’m writing about my Jiu-Jitsu journey isn’t advice or instruction. It’s my diary — my experience as an old fart, almost 58 years old, who started Jiu-Jitsu five months ago. I want to share it with people who are thinking about starting, who have just started, or who are simply interested.
Yesterday wasn’t so bad. I had five rounds of free rolling with five different partners, and it went quite well. I managed to control my partners at times and escape situations where I was on the verge of tapping.
In the last round, my partner was on top of me in mount position, trying to finish an Americana. I was very close to tapping. I was already thinking about it. But somehow, I managed to turn my arm just enough to prevent the final pressure. He was so focused on the submission that, for a brief moment, he lost full control of my chest. That was my chance. I used the space to make a sweep and ended up on top of him.
He pulled me into his guard, but I managed to control his arms by pinning his elbows with my forearms — something I’ve seen works well, especially against heavier partners.
The class began with a heavy warm-up, including core and neck-strengthening exercises, followed by guard submission techniques, and finally the above-mentioned 5x3-minute rolling rounds.
