Sometimes a little frustrated

Another day at the academy with mixed feelings. Here is what my rolling looks like. Usually, we start with me sitting, and the other guy tries to pass my guard, which happens very quickly. For the rest of the round, I struggle underneath and try to survive. Every now and then, I manage to catch one leg and end up in half guard, and once in a while I even get a full guard but struggle to sweep. If I don’t tap until the end of the round, I’m happy. Occasionally, I manage to escape from the bottom and get to side control or even mount.

Once I’m the one dominating, especially in side control, I often control the game, but I seldom really know how to submit somebody. In most cases, I manage to get to north-south. It works. Not always, but at least the other guy is in a difficult position. I can only get a joint lock like a Kimura or an Americana if I’m the stronger one. From guard, I also sometimes like to go for an omoplata. It doesn’t always work, but at least I get close. But all in all, my rolling is still almost pure survival.

Can I be satisfied with it after 14 months of training at the age of 58? I don’t know. Often I think that’s the way it goes and that I will get better with time, but sometimes, I have to admit, I’m a little frustrated.
