Yesterday, right before training, I had one of those moments of doubt — wondering if I can really do this. Am I getting too old? Is all of this maybe too demanding for my age? Maybe the whole thing is just too big a bite. At one point, I even considered skipping training altogether because I was feeling tired.
All of that lasted only until I stepped onto the tatami and the session began. As always, we started with a warm-up, followed by technique drills. Then we trained with a partner: each of us spent 2 minutes in a dominant position, such as mount or side control, trying to finish the fight, while the other tried to escape. As soon as one of us succeeded, we’d reset and start again. After two minutes, we switched roles. After every drill — so 2 x 2 minutes — we changed partners.
After several rounds of that, we moved on to free rolling: five rounds of five minutes each. And with that, I completed my 100th round of rolling.
In the last round, I even managed to dominate from side control. My partner started to escape, but as he turned, I took his back. I couldn’t finish the choke, but I controlled the position. For me, that’s a huge victory — especially because this is a guy who usually dominates me.
Onward! Until the next training session.
