Three Months Later: Back on the Mat

After three months, I’m back to BJJ.

How does it feel?

Okay, I’m still in good shape because I stayed active all summer. I was moving every day, so I wasn’t gassed out.

And my BJJ?

Yes. I didn’t forget it!

It was still there, almost as if there had never been a three-month break.

There was one guy I had managed to control before, but this time he was dominating me. He was much younger than me and had continued coming to classes throughout the summer. That clearly made a difference.

Then I had a couple of rounds with some new guys who had only recently started. They were younger than me, heavier than me, and not exactly out of shape either. They started fast and aggressively, but I managed to bring them under control and eventually submit them.

And that’s what I’m proud of.

My BJJ has improved significantly since I started one year ago.

This was probably the first time I really tested my Jiu-Jitsu against people with little or no previous grappling experience. And it showed me something: I can actually use what I’ve learned against someone who doesn’t know much about Jiu-Jitsu.

That may sound obvious, but for me, it was a milestone.

Three months off the mats didn’t erase what I had learned.

It was still there.

And that feels pretty damn good.
