In my previous post, I wrote about why I take BJJ classes. Now I want to tell you why I write this blog. Basically, to save my soul. It’s primarily for me, to feel fulfilled, but also to share my experiences and struggles with others in their fifties facing the same problems.
I spent most of my life in the merchant navy. While I was on board, I worked out and jogged around the vessel on the main deck. I did it more for my soul than for my body. It helped me survive the days, weeks, and months at sea.
Last Wednesday, we did a lot of grip fighting at the beginning, first standing and then from guard. It was like a small fight: we had to grab each other and break free, trying to get a better position to continue. Then we practiced sweeps from guard. This was followed by rolling from different positions with five people on the mat, while the rest of us went up to each of them in turn, for example, to pass the guard or take a grip on the gi. We had 10 to 20 seconds, depending on the position. Whoever won stayed on the mat. These are good exercises because you can practice a particular technique against different partners in a realistic fight situation in a short period of time. The loser of each round had to do either 10 push-ups or 10 squats.
In the end, we did a lot of core training. Overall, it was a good class.
Since I wasn’t in class on Friday or Saturday because of family obligations, I did some resistance band exercises and planks at home, and yesterday I biked 10 km and did 100 one-pump burpees. Immediately after the 100 burpees, my heart rate was 81 bpm, and my blood pressure was 143/85, which I think is good.
On Friday, I had my yearly medical exam. For the last three or four years, I had a slightly fatty liver. Now it’s no longer fatty! Another big win for me!
