My whole body is sore after Friday’s class. After a short warm-up, we practiced one-leg takedowns and side control. Then we moved on to fast, short rounds starting from closed guard. The person on top had to sweep, land a triangle choke, or whatever else worked, while the other guy had to escape from the closed guard. The winner stayed on the mat, and the next guy had to step in immediately. The loser did 10 squats and went back in line for the next round. We did the same drill from back control.
At the end, we had 8 rounds of free rolling. The rounds were only 2 or 3 minutes long, and the rest between rounds was only one minute. You had to switch partners for the next round with whoever was nearby, and anyone left without a partner had to do push-ups. This made the training fairly demanding, with almost constant movement and little rest. For dessert, we did 3 or 4 rounds of leg raises.
Photo: That’s me in the blue gi, surviving. My usual position: I spend 90% of the rolling time down there.
