“…learning how to relax under pressure is a key step to tapping into its potential.”
That’s what Josh Waitzkin writes in his book The Art of Learning.
Another day, while I was rolling with an older black belt, he told me, “I am relaxing while I am underneath you, and I am relaxing while I am on top of you. And you are working all the time.”
Learn how to save energy. Use it at the right moment. But for that, you need practice — and more practice — and even more practice.
Yesterday was only my fourth class this month, and I could clearly feel the missed sessions. I was struggling like I did three months ago.
Nevertheless, I had four rounds of 5-minute free rolling. Before that, we had a short warm-up and then spent quite some time practicing triangle choke, omoplata, and armbar finishes — especially when the opponent rolls forward while defending the omoplata.
And at the end, just to make sure we were completely done, we had a five-minute burpee workout.
